From Matt:
As with any physical class, it takes time to sync coordination, timing and technique together. In kung fu, we have the added mental training of heightened awareness, confidence and the retraining of our reflexes. That said, many may find it frustrating in the early stages of learning the first few of the ancient techniques. I add fun and functional “Learn-today, do-today” techniques to make it interesting and encouraging.
Learning curves are different for different people. Physical skill acquisition ability is unrelated to intelligence, all will eventually get it, just different speeds. I was a slow starter but made it to the very rare level of 8th Degree Blackbelt.
As with any club, it takes a few weeks to settle in and for the group to mesh. Please fill free to approach me about any concerns. I have decades of experience and have taught hundreds of students from several countries.
From my over 3 decades of teaching in Asia and America, the biggest regret I’ve had from my students or former students is that they wished they would of stuck it out or gave it a longer chance. They deeply regretted dropping out.
Some later saw their friends, family and former classmates at such a high skill.
Some returned to the class to join after a incident or reconsideration and many of the students that started with them were now very proficient and even instructors. This has happened more than once.
My personal philosophy: As with school education which is mandatory and necessary for success in the world, I insist my children learn this skill as a survival and essential Life Skill.
Some kids are resistant to social change at first and may not understand this alien Asian “thing” which is kung fu. Many have a total misconception about it due to movies and phonies.
Give it a long try. As with any activity, you will have peaks and valleys of interest. Some weeks you may not feel like coming, some you look forward to coming. This is natural and the more your skill increases, the more you will love it. I promise you, it will be one of the most meaningful achievements in your life, you’ll find.
For the new students, I make it as interesting and fun as possible so that they enjoy or learn to enjoy it, but to me it is not only considered a hobby or activity, it is an “essential” life skill in today’s world. So, in my family it is mandatory to learn real world self defense.
The percentages are against us. In our lifetime About 3 out of 4 people will become victims of a completed or attempted assault; 2 in 5 will be victims of this crime at least twice.
OTHER INFORMATION:
FEES

This is a Private Club. Membership has requirements.
Part of the requirements is having a moral character and dedication.
Another requirement is understanding this club is for self improvement, self protection, and we follow a specific code. People who want to fight, kick butt, etc. will not be accepted.
Communication is a requirement: If you don’t attend 3 consecutive lessons with no contact, we will assume you quit and make your spots available to others.
IF you find that the $15 per class is not affordable for some reason, please talk with Matt in confidence and we will work with you. Don’t let cash flow issues interrupt learning this valuable life skill.
You can pay as you go, or for the month if desired. Paying in advance a month is cheaper and recommended. Advance payment can help motivate and inspire you to attend.
We encourage members to help us grow to spread real world self defense in a society of fakes and dangerous misinformation on self defense. The more members, the cheaper for all.

Unlike other martial arts schools where the Jwun Wei is the schools disciplinarian in the CAI Kung Fu Schools, the Jwun Wei’s position is one of guidance and reminder of protocols, rules and events. The Jwun Wei makes sure that the customs and traditions of the school are carried out properly so that they to can be passed down unchanged. The customs and traditions in the CAI Kung Fu Schools teach us respect, honor, friendship and camaraderie; they give us a sense of belonging.
A Jwun Wei is usually an adult senior student; they are diligent, friendly, helpful and always respectful. They are recognizable by the Jwun Wei badge (Sgt-at-arms patch) they wear on their front pocket area of their training uniform.
